When it comes to purchasing renters insurance, there are so many factors to consider:

  • How much coverage do you need?
  • What types of incidents fall within your coverage?
  • And most importantly, how to pick the best renters insurance for you?

In the past, I ended up overpaying big time for coverage that I didn’t even need. I was leaving so much money on the table!

But, within the past year, I learned about a company called Toggle (from Farmers Insurance) that offers renters insurance. Not only is the interface intuitive and easy to understand, but also highly customizable.

You can build the perfect renters insurance plan for you and it’s super easy to do.

I checked them out in-depth after one of my buddies from Chicago told me about them. If only this company was around when I was living there – I would have saved tens of thousands of dollars over the long run!

But don’t take my word for it. This review provides information from their website, including the different features that the platform offers and how you can best utilize them.

How to Get Started with Toggle

One cool thing about Toggle is that they don’t require a lot of information for a quote (no email, social info, etc.) and it doesn’t impact your credit score! Since Toggle only does what’s known as a “soft pull,” it doesn’t impact your credit.

When you sign up for Toggle, there are three different subscription options to choose from: Basic, Standard, and Premium.

You can change your option at any time. You can either stick with the default package, or toggle your coverages to create an ideal personalized plan.

Toggle has interesting optional add-ons to consider as well. One unique feature is CreditLift, a way for someone to build their credit just by having their rent payments reflected on their credit report.

Toggle Subscription Options

Toggle Basic Subscription

This is the lowest level of coverage starting at $5.00 per month. In Toggle’s words: “The liability coverage many landlords require + a little coverage for your stuff.

With this subscription, you’ll start with a $500 deductible (how much $ in losses you’ll need to cover before insurance kicks in), $100K liability protection (legal and medical coverage in case of a liability-related injury or property damage), and $1,000 blanket coverage (the $ value of your personal property covered by this plan).

Toggle Standard Subscription

This is the middle tier of coverage, which starts around $12.50 per month (according to Toggle, a typical rate for a standard subscription). In Toggle’s words: “A step up from the Basic for the person who has a little more stuff they want to cover”.

With the Standard subscription, the defaults for your deductible and liability protection are the same as the Basic, but there is more coverage for your personal stuff and something called temporary living costs.

The cool part is (we’ll touch on this later), you can toggle the coverage amount for any of these categories to customize a plan that works for you.

Toggle Premium Subscription

This is the highest coverage subscription package, which starts at around $25.25 per month for most people (again, according to Toggle). In Toggle’s words: “Next level coverage for folks living large with nicer items they want to protect”.

With the Premium subscription, the default package ups your liability protection to $200K and temporary living costs to $100/day in addition to much higher coverage for your personal items and some beneficial add-ons.

Once again, this is just the default package and all of these options can be customized to your personal needs.

Creating a Custom Toggle Plan

Now we get to the fun part. I’m going to show you different Toggle options and break down how you can build a personalized coverage for your situation.

The first step is to select your default package. In this example, I’m going to pick the Standard subscription and click ‘Personalize’.

What Options Can You Toggle?

After you pick your subscription option, you’ll arrive at the customization page where you can toggle coverage for each category. (See Toggle Screenshots below)Each item type has a certain chance of damage/destruction, so mess around with the options to see how they affect your monthly premium. Let’s dive in.

Toggle Options

The first option is technology coverage. I personally like to have my technology covered since I rely on my laptop and other electronics so much. According to Toggle this coverage includes accidental breakage and even lost items (i.e., you left your phone in the Lyft and never saw it again).

Toggle Furniture and Appliance Coverage

A majority of my furniture and appliances were bought from Craigslist or discount retailers so I definitely wouldn’t have much coverage in this category. This coverage actually turned out to be quite cheap when I played with the different coverage levels, so depending on the stuff you have, play with the toggle and see.

Toggle Fashion Jewelry Coverage

I’m not into fashion and jewelry at all. I personally would keep this coverage to a minimum, but again, it’s all about your specific situation. If you’re a sneakerhead or have a sweet handbag collection, you might appreciate this.

Toggle Creative and Maker

I have a couple of nice guitars and cameras so I’d probably opt for some decent coverage here. If it’s something you can’t imagine living without, consider insuring it.

Toggle Insurance Active Coverage

Most of my active gear didn’t make it with me in my move to New York.  Personally, I would turn this coverage off. But if you have a nice bike, or an expensive home gym, this coverage might make sense.

Toggle Collectibles Coverage

If you’re a collector of any kind, you may want to insure your collectibles. You can either insure these items for their covered cost or for their replacement cost (more on this later).

Toggle Deductible

Just like any other type of insurance, renters insurance comes with a certain deductible. Basically, this is the minimum amount of damage that has to happen before your insurance coverage kicks in. The lower the deductible, the higher your monthly premium.

And the higher your deductible, the lower your monthly premium. The great thing about saving a bunch of money is that you can afford to choose a high deductible plan and lower your monthly cost (since you probably have the money to cover a small loss).

Toggle Insurance Liability Coverage

This is the most expensive, but one of the most important options. Toggle points out that liability protection helps relieve some of the financial burden if you’re found legally liable for someone else’s injury or property damage.

Covered costs can include both legal and medical expenses for the injured party.

Selecting Add On Options

In addition to the customization options we just discussed, Toggle also provides some Add Ons. These can really help you personalize your plan and build the perfect renters insurance package for you.

Most of these additional options seemed fairly straightforward to me, but I just want to touch on temporary living costs a bit, since this option is toggled to ‘Yes’ with the default Standard subscription.

Real Life Example of the Benefits of Toggle Renters Insurance

Quick story about temporary living costs: One of my friends had a house fire at his apartment and the home was deemed unlivable for almost 6 months.

From what he told me, fortunately, his temporary living cost insurance was set to $100/day and he received that amount (up to 30 days) while the apartment was rebuilt.

Another added benefit is that if he would have just stayed with a friend he could pocket the money, since it’s paid out like a per diem (per Toggle).

Just because of this one simple option, he was able to save thousands of dollars on temporary living costs which were covered by his insurance.

The point is, you can never be too careful. Hopefully, you never find yourself in a similar situation, but for only a few bucks per month, I think it is well worth the security.

Plus, Toggle makes it super easy to change your coverage amount at any given time. Literally a couple of clicks.

Toggle offers a modern, customizable renters insurance plan that might be right for you.
