While many budgeting tools can help you to save money, today, I want to take a better look at Trim (also known as Trim app or Asktrim), which offers something a little more unique.

Think of Trim like your automated financial assistant – scanning your payments and letting you know where you can, and should, cut costs.

Sure, if you’re thinking of your monthly subscription to, say, Spotify – it may not seem like you’ll save much. But everything adds up – and you can save nice amounts of cash over a couple of years.

In this article, I’m looking closely at what the Trim app does, how it can save you money, and, most importantly, if it is legit and secure.

What is Trim?

Trim app was designed to help you save money – by becoming your automated personal financial advisor.

It helps you to manage your finances and save money in the ways you didn’t think you can!

Trim offers quite a few features I’m excited about – like canceling unwanted subscriptions and bill negotiation (which I’ll cover in more detail further in the post).

New ones are being added all the time to help you save even more.

How Does Trim Work?

Let’s have a look at how Trim app works to save you money by the features it offers:

Trim Subscriptions

trim subscriptionsOne of the most exciting features of Trim is the unwanted subscription cancellation.

Once you create an account with Trim, you will have to link your bank accounts, so it can track all your spending. Trim will then identify your frequent transactions, and recognize them as subscriptions (sending you an alert, if so).  From there on, you can choose to keep or cancel the subscription.

To cancel unwanted subscriptions, all you have to do is send a message ‘Cancel name of service.’ Trim will do the rest.

I think this is an awesome feature that could benefit everyone. There are so many subscription services these days that it is very easy to forget about the ones you pay for monthly – I know I’ve definitely been there.

These monthly payments might be insignificant, but they add up, and Trim is here to save that money for you.

Trim Bill Negotiation

trim negotiateTrim can also help you save by negotiating the price of your bills for you – because it works with many internet and cable providers.

All you have to do is find your provider on the Trim app, or send them a photo of your latest bill. Trim robots will chat with them, or someone from the Trim team will have a call with them to get your bill down.

Trim can also find the best offers and promotions for you – helping you pick the most cost-effective deals. Trim claims that they can get your bills down by as much as 30% – and it doesn’t cost a thing until they can lower the cost of your bills.

If they manage to reduce the amount you pay (which they do most of the time), they will take up to 33% of your annual savings, which is still a very good deal for you all things considered.

For example, if Trim gets your cable bill down by $10 a month, the yearly saving is $120. Trim will charge you $40, and the rest 80 dollars is yours. You just saved $80!

Trim Simple Savings

trim simple savingsOne other service worth mentioning is Simple Savings – an online high-yield savings account, which offers the possibility to automate your contributions.

It is a great way to save money and get great interest without even thinking about it.

Trim Debt Payoff

trim debt payoffDebt Payoff is great news for those who are trying to get rid of their debt.

Not only does Trim provide you with expert advice and a debt payoff plan, but they will also lower your APRs.

Shop Car and Home Insurance

Trim can also shop to find you the best home and car insurance.

Power Outage Credit

To top it all off, Trim can seek to get you credit from your cable or internet provider, should you experience a power outage.

Even if you didn’t notice there was one!

Is Trim Legit?

Yes, Trim can definitely save you money on your bills – in fact, it can save on average $276 a year!

You can see testimonials from real people and the amounts they saved on Trim’s official website. The amounts vary since it all depends on the subscriptions and services you have.

In any case, what’s great is that you only pay Trim if they manage to save you money – so it is risk-free and definitely worth a try.

Is Trim Safe?

Now that you know more about Trim and what it can do for you, you may be wondering whether the Trim app is safe to use. Because you’ll be linking your bank accounts (highly private financial data), you obviously want to make sure that Trim does everything to keep your data safe and secure.

Well, the good news is that Trim is as safe as a bank. They are using Plaid to collect banking credentials and never receive nor store your banking data. By doing so, they can only access your transactions in read-only mode. Trim cannot, in any way, move money or make any changes in your accounts.

The Trim website and server also have 256-bit SSL encryption, and they do request two-factor authentication when signing up for their service. If you are signing in with Facebook, their OAuth protocol is there to protect your data.

Finally, all the data that Trim collects is hosted on online data storage on AWS (Amazon Web Services). This is the same service that is used by NASA, the Department of Defense, and the FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). To sum it all up, you can be more than sure that your data is as safe as it can get.

These are the layers of protection Trim has for you:

  • 256-bit SSL encryption
  • Read-only banking information through Plaid.
  • AWS storage and hosting
  • Two-factor authentication for SMS and OAuth for Facebook sign in

How Much Does Trim Cost?

It doesn’t cost you anything to open an account with Trim. Many of their services are free of charge, including finding subscriptions and canceling them, spending alerts and personalized reminders, detections of overdraft fees and fighting them, personal finance dashboard, and more.

That said, if you want the extras, you will have to pay.

You will be charged if Trim manages to negotiate your bills (they will take up to 33% of the amount you save annually). This fee is only applied if they successfully get your bill down.

Trim also has other paid services such as savings accounts, which have a monthly fee of $2 and Debt Payoff, which includes a payoff plan, financial advice, and the lowering of your APRs.

How Does Trim Make Money?

It might sound too good to be true with so many free services – and you might think there’s a catch. Well, the answer is quite simple.

Trim will take a cut of everything they manage to save for you, except for canceled subscriptions.

Trim also offers Premium features that will cost you $10 a month. On top of that, like most other budgeting tools, Trim will recommend other financial products, such as credit cards and insurance services.

Pros and Cons of Trim App

So, what are the pros and cons of Trim? There are definitely more pros, though, it’s important to highlight the cons as well:

  • Free and easy to sign up to
  • You will not be charged anything until they save you money
  • They negotiate your internet and cable bills and help you to save up to 30%
  • Trim will detect and will be able to cancel subscriptions you don’t use
  • A financial dashboard helps you to plan and budget
  • Set personalized alerts and reminders
  • Many other great features that help you to save money

  • You will be asked to link your bank accounts, which might feel a bit uncomfortable for some
  • They charge you up to 33% of the annual amount they save for you, which you have to pay in a lump sum
  • There is no mobile app, but the website is mobile-friendly

Is Trim Worth It?

trim app reviewTo sum up, Trim is a great tool that can help you save money – and it’s definitely legit and secure.

It is also super simple to use as it communicates to you via SMS or Facebook Messenger.

The best part about trying Trim is that it will not cost you anything to see how much you can save.

Only when you agree for them to negotiate your bills, will they take a cut from what they manage to save for you.

Another great thing about Trim is that they are very innovative and are always on the lookout to find more ways on how you can save money.

I’m very curious to see what is the next money-saving tool that Trim will introduce!
